5 Tips to Turn Your Bedroom Into A 5-Star Hotel

Throughout our lifetime, we’ve visited and stayed in some pretty nice hotels. I recall staying at a resort in Bimini, Bahamas, and I remember how lavish yet comfortable it felt. The room had clean modern lines, fresh linen, and everything was so uniformed and symmetrical. So when coming up with the design for our bedroom makeover I knew that I wanted it to feel like I was away at a hotel every night. So I partnered up with my favorite brand, The Home Depot, to put together a beautiful space.
Our room is not large. Since we love living in the city, we had to compromise on space. But having a small room doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice on design, you just have to be smart about what you bring into the space. So here was our list of must haves: We wanted to upgrade to a king size bed, new bedside tables, new storage for our clothes, a space for the TV, secondary lighting to create a soft and inviting ambiance in the evening and we wanted space to walk around (we didn’t want it to feel overcrowded). We teamed up with The Home Depot to bring our vision to life.
Here’s the floor plan I came up with:
Tip #1: The first thing I focused on was functionality. The room had to have adequate storage and function, but yet be minimal at the same time. So I decided to eliminate having a dresser and opted for two 3 drawer chest of drawers that we would function as clothes storage and nightstands. I selected these beautiful wood (and very heavy, 99lbs each) chest of drawers from the Home Decorators Collection exclusively at The Home Depot. I love that they have legs, to provide sight lines, and not make the space feel so heavy. If you’re thinking of doing this same thing in your room, be sure to get 3 drawer chest of drawers (and not 5 drawers) so that it can be low enough to use as side tables. We also added this simple clean lined bed frame by Stylewell. Since we knew that we had to place our bed in front of the window, I chose a bed that had a low profile headboard to not block the sun during the day.
We also added a TV Wall Unit since we took out the dresser. The TV unit is slender in depth so that it doesn’t take up too much walk space, it hangs on the wall to provide more floor space, and acts as a secondary area for small storage. We even added these two olive green ottomans underneath to use as secondary seating, but also gave it a home underneath the TV unit.
Tip #2: Introduce Texture! I prefer texture over pattern because sometimes patterns can give a room too much movement, and not feel as relaxing. This is not to say that pattern should be eliminated totally, but for that luxurious hotel feel, keep patterns to a minimum and turn up the texture. I brought texture in with the velvet pillows, fur throw, wooden chest of drawers, organic sheets, and other natural materials found in my accessories.
Tip #3: And speaking of accessories: Eliminate small accessories and go big! Don’t dress up your tabletops and other surfaces with small items. Introduce larger vases, big books, and wide objects to fill up space. When you have too many small accessories it can make the room feel busy and crowded and that’s not 5-star hotel vibes. Also, don’t forget about artwork. Buy it large and hang it at eye level and about 3-4 inches away from each other if they exist on the same wall. The Home Depot has a massive selection of artwork for any style. I opted for an extra large piece of art and a large piece of art hung side by side.
Tip #4: Bring comfort into your space. We upgraded our mattress from a queen size to a king size to give my husband and I more sleeping room. We even switched from a spring mattress and got a 14’’ Lucid Memory Foam Mattress also from Homedepot.com. We made sure to dress the bed in organic sheets from The Company Store. Added black out drapes which helps block the sun from coming in and disturbing your sleep and keeps the room feeling comfortable from outside weather. And since we have hardwood floors, we added a rug to provide comfort for our feet.
And lastly Tip #5: Lighting! Lighting is key to the overall ambiance of the room. We switched out our builder grade ceiling light for this semi-flush mount 3 bulb light. We also added secondary lighting with side table lamps. These beautiful large glass lamps set the mood for the evening and makes you want to crawl into bed and wind down from the hectic day.
Every hotel room that’s ever made me feel relaxed and cozy had all these elements I mentioned above. Follow these tips and head to Homedepot.com/decor to find furniture and decor pieces to bring a 5-star hotel feel to your bedroom.
