Holiday Kitchen and Archway Decor

I have to make a confession guys…before the fall season even hit, I was thinking about holiday decor for this year. Everything from how I would decorate the tree to decor for our newly renovated kitchen to colors and textures I knew I wanted to go bold this year with my choices. But holiday decor is nothing without the right strategy on how to hang everything. So today’s post is all about hanging up holiday decorations. Don’t worry we’ll get to the tree decor very soon in another post!
I’m focusing this post specifically on kitchen holiday decor and decor around your archways and cased openings. I’ll be using products from 3M Command, OOK, and Velcro.
First up, let’s adorn our cabinets by adding mini wreaths to our cabinet doors. This is quite easy! I used these clear 3M Command mini hooks, attached upside down on the inner part of the cabinet door (make sure to place it in the center). Grab your mini wreaths. I made mine with this garland combined with this garland, on top of an 8 inch wreath form. Pull out your favorite 2inch ribbon, and some paper clips. String the ribbon through the wreath opening and attach the two ends with a paperclip. You’ll then hook the paperclip onto the mini Command hook which you have already placed upside down on the inner part of your cabinet door (See picture below). I let my wreaths hang at the center of my cabinets. So adjust your ribbon to your measurements.
To jazz up the stove top area, I found a wintery theme oil painting at a vintage shop that was the perfect size to fit over my range. Using a clear medium Command Hook that can hold 2lbs, I attached the vintage piece with no damage to my tile and I can easily remove it while cooking.
Now don’t forget to add a Christmas wreath to your doors and windows. I used the same clear medium Command Hook that holds 2 pounds. Now if your wreaths are large and/or have very heavy ornaments, find a command hook that can hold heavier pounds.
And now for the showstopper…Adding garland around your archways and case openings!!!
For this installation you’ll need the 2 Command jumbo utility hooks that holds 7.5lbs, a pack of light clips, OOK green twist wire and Velcro One-Wrap thin ties.
Start by adding the two jumbo utility hooks to either ends of your opening/archway (follow the instructions on the back of the package). These hooks combined will support 15lbs of garland and decor, which is more than enough for what I’m doing. I used two of the same garland to really make the archway decor look full. I added one garland first and then the second after. Because I’m using faux garland I have to use light clips to keep the garland in place alongside the opening. Use as many light clips as you need and start tucking the inner garland wiring into the light clips. They should slide right in (check out my instagram stories to see a live demonstration). (I used 4-5 clips per side of the opening).
Next, begin to add your fillers. I’m using real magnolias, real eucalyptus, pine cones and other faux branches. In most cases you can just stick the stems into the garland and it will hold just fine, but for the pine cones, and certain branches without long stems you have to use green twist wiring to securely attach it to the garland.
What’s garland without velvet or satin bows!? I used Velcro thin ties to make the bows because it’s so much quicker and easier to handle. After you’ve made your desired bows, attach it with the green wiring or you can pull another Velcro thin tie to attach it to the top corners of the opening or throughout your garland.
And now you can have beautifully decorated sections of your home for the holidays, with no damage to your surfaces. You can find all of these hanging devices at The Home Depot online, and they can be shipped to your home or picked up in store.
